about

Based on Mishkan HaNefesh:Yom Kippur p293 Vidui reading published by CCAR Press

* Composed for a High Holy Days songwriting competition for adaptations of liturgy in the Reform movement’s new machzor. I leafed through every page of both volumes - Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur - before selecting a few texts to adapt. This was my favorite one.

* Written after a summer of serious introspection about the disconnect between the person I want to be and the person I sometimes am.

* Features my longtime friend and musical collaborator Rachel Mylan on duet vocals.

* Didn’t get selected for the compilation but we liked it anyway - this was the first song Zach picked to work on when we began the Ruach Rock 3 project together.

* Like many of the songs for this album, this was originally released online on my Facebook page

GRATITUDE REFLECTION: Reach out to someone you've hurt. You don't have to apologize, just reach out. Today. Right now.

lyrics

"I WANT TO BE FORGIVEN" (by Jay Rapoport)

CHORUS:
I did something wrong
I want to be forgiven
Give me the strength
To do what’s right
2x

Because I was angry
Because I didn’t think
Because I was exhausted and on edge
Because I’d been drinking (ALT LYRIC FOR KIDS: "Felt like I was sinking"
Because I can be mean
I was reckless and selfish
Because I thought I could get away with it

CHORUS

Because I’m in pain
I wish I could undo it
Because I hurt him
Because I lost her trust
Because I let them down
I was self-destructive
That’s not who I am
It’s not who I want to be

Oh bring down my walls of defensiveness and self-righteousness
Help me to stay humble
Please

CHORUS
