* Composed for the Brit Milah ceremony for my son Emet (which means "truth" in Hebrew) in 2017, during his first week of life
* A well-known Polish leader of early Chasidut named Rabbi Simcha Bunim said the following famous words: “In every coat there should be two pockets. In one pocket should be a piece of paper that reads, ‘For my sake was the world created (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5).’ In the other should be a piece of paper that reads, ‘I am only dust and ashes (Genesis 18:27).'”
* Emet’s middle name is Grae, after my beloved great-aunt Grace, who died shortly before his birth. She and her family were one of the reasons I loved visiting Chicago as a young adult, and eventually wanted to live there. My wife Rachel and I couldn’t think of a middle name with a “G,” and driving to visit my cousins one afternoon, it occurred to us to just drop the “C” from her name. We told them, and they loved it, and so it was.
* Emet is literally descended from Kings, the surname of my in-laws
* The “Doc” referred to in the bridge of the song is “Doc Emmett Brown” of Back to the Future - my favorite movie. The advice is adapted from his advice in the 3rd movie - “Your future isn’t written yet! So make it a good one.”
GRATITUDE REFLECTION: If this whole world was truly created for you - how can you make the most of it? Choose one thing to do today.
lyrics
"CREATED FOR YOU" (by Jay Rapoport)
For Emet
I remember the spot where I was standing
When I heard we were having you
And from the day we first uttered your name
I smiled at our secret truth
Yeah, you were our secret truth
CHORUS:
You prince among men, descended from Kings
Strong and Graceful, honest and true
We are but dust and ashes and yet
This whole world was created for you, my boy
This whole world was created for you
A home full of love has been waiting
To not just be three (us) anymore
We've had a good run but we're over the moon
Becoming a little bit more
Yeah we're becoming a little bit more
CHORUS
Doc said your future isn’t written yet son
It’s whatever you make it, so make it a good one
Before we find justice, saving the day
You need truth, to find your way
Seeing your sister hold you the first time
With each shining face like a mirror
I can barely stop smiling
Cuz our boy is finally here
Yeah I will never stop smiling
cuz our boy is finally here
CHORUS
